If they are no longer part of the German social security system, a refund of the employee share (9.3% of gross income) is often possible.

Non-EU citizens are particularly eligible, as they generally cannot continue paying into the German pension scheme voluntarily after leaving the country. That makes a refund much more likely — even after short employment periods.

This also includes expats, students, freelancers, and researchers who worked in Germany temporarily. Even if someone held only internships or part-time roles, their contributions may still qualify for a refund — as long as they’ve been living outside the EU/EEA for at least 24 months.
